Music review: “Dr. Dee”
“When he’s bored, there’s nothing Damon Albern likes to do more than knock out an Afro-pastoral folk opera. Especially when it’s an Afro-pastoral folk opera about a 16th-century mathematician.”
I think they’re doing a serious disservice to Dr. Dee to describe arguably the greatest English Renaissance magician as merely a “mathematician”, but this new opera based on Dee by Damon Albern is fantastic. There’s a full-length stream of the album online which is definitely worth a listen; the album will be out next month for those who aren’t geographically lucky enough to see it live.
